how does having laser eye surgery compromise being able to still enjoy scuba diving (i.e. pressure to 250 ft?)

From what I understand, laser surgery affects intraocular pressure in the eyeball; when scuba diving, submerging to pressures that exceed one ATM (at the surface) down to 250 ft - the point beyond which nitrogen narcosis is likely to be experienced, hence sport divers do not exceed this depth) what effect does/will having the eye surgery have upon vision, or compromising the eye in any way? Have never heard of any article in this regard, and when I sent ltrs of inquiry both on the internet and to ophthalmologists, never seem to get an answer, even to admit they simply do not know?
Answer
First, normal sport diving depth is way less than 250 FSW. Most start to get narcosis way sooner -- around 100 FSW -- and sport depth is generally regarded down to around 130 FSW. Much beyond 180 FSW and I want mixed gas as the chance for an 02 tox hit goes way up... Laser surgery should not impact the pressure of fluid in your eye. But it can impact how the eye reacts to pressure -- so your concern is legit. (I am aware of the reverse problem happening in high altitude mountaineering). If you are a member, DAN (Divers Alert Network) is the place to ask your question. Scuba Doc also has an article at http://www.scuba-doc.com/diveye.htm#Diving%20After%20Eye%20Surgery that talks about potential impacts and how log you should wait after surgery before diving. As with all such matters, consult a qualified doctor as your case may be unique and they are up on the latest research!
