Was this a normal eye exam?
I went to the VA clinic for an eye exam to see if I had cateracts as this runs in my family. I had drops put in my eyes to dilate them. After about 45 minutes I went into the exam room where I had an exam that lasted for over an hour. I had drops put in my eyes four times. I was first examined by puting my chin & forhead in a machine were a green light went back and forth. This was done three different times and each time the light was going back & forth at least fifty times while I looked in various directions. The light got very hot on my eyes. During this the doctor keep typing various notes on the computer. After this, he then used a wooden cotten swab and pulled forward my eyelid and moved each eye with this swab as I looked in various directions. This was very uncomfortable. The next day my right eye was totally red and I went into the evergency room and was told I had an infection. I also had what I saw was a blister on one eye. Both eyes still hurt. Dr. is intern.
No cateracts were found and I was given drops to address the infection which did help. But, my vision seems dim.
Was I really given an exam or was I used as teaching material by a UCLA student at the VA clinic? Why all that typing as the exam was going on?
Answer
Well I am not a ophthalmologist but i am medical doctor in India Jamnagar Gujrat!I am a Medical General Practioner and In fact we have to deal with all patients right from dental to delivary !Having gone through your writings I personally think that if you have just gone to eye clinic for Catract cheking than the slit lamp exam, fundoscopy is enough for to rule out cataract! Why examiner has swab your eye?Was that watering? You might have developed allery towards the eye drops they have used to dilate your eyes ! We without going through this just by finger counting can say and just by throughing a light transversaly on the respective eye can say if you have cataract! But more scientifically your visual index should have be taken! In short I presume you have been examined in a way you should not for a given specific diagnosis or you should have been tested for allery to specific eye drops what ever the case may be !!!
